Science Club

Students must maintain an 86% average or higher in all science classes in order to qualify for membership. The Science Club completes several civic projects each year and holds fundraising activities for field trips and scholarships. The Science Club seniors go on a special trip every year. In past years, seniors have traveled to Florida to view sights such as Kennedy Space Center, EPCOT Center, MGM Universal Studios, as well as Disney World. Members were guided on a special tour at Disney World, receiving explanations and demonstrations of the technology used to make the theme park a reality to the viewer. The club also funds scholarships for graduating seniors.

National Honor Society

Students must have a GPA of 90% or higher in order to apply for membership in NHS. A committee of teachers selects applicants based on the following criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and extracurricular participation. The NHS members tutor elementary students. Interviews and initiation of new members starts in February of each year.

Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl is a trivia competition among local schools in the areas of science, math, history, language, music, art, social science, and literature. The students are asked questions and then must "buzz in" quickly with the correct answer. The object of the competition is to answer the most questions correctly within ten minutes' time.

Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a project that provides a team of three lawyers and three witnesses the opportunity to argue their case in front of a judge and jury. The roles of judge and jury are played by area judges and lawyers. The teams are given a fact situation, witnesses' affidavits, and evidence. The teams are assigned a side of the argument, either Prosecution or Defense. With these tools, each team attempts to successfully defend or prosecute the defendant. The jury then awards points and a victory to the prevailing team.

One-Act

The One-Act Play competition consists of participating in invitational and Conference meets. Students can act in the play, be a part of the stage crew, or help in the direction of the play.

Music

Chorus, Band, Pep Band, Swing Choir, Marching Band, Honor Band, and Flag Corps make up the special activities in the music department. These groups participate in area contests, parades, and hold local performances throughout the year. The Honor Band consists of students selected from each of the Conference schools. The members rehearse for a day and then perform in a concert that evening. The music department is led by high school music teacher Shane Whitford and elementary music teacher Eileen Zentner.

Student Council

The Student Council is composed of a boy and girl representative from each class in grades seven through twelve. This organization coordinates the local Red Cross Blood Drive, plans homecoming and other dances, and raises money for local charities at Thanksgiving and Christmas. They also have several fundraisers each year to help pay for student activities.

Math Team

The Math team enters three contests each year: Northwest Missouri State University, Nemaha Valley, and Peru State College. Members are chosen based on math ability, grades, and interest in the team. Grades 7-9 participate at Nemaha Valley, while grades 10-12 compete at Northwest MO State and Peru.

Speech

The Speech Team competes at various meets throughout the region. Events include poetry, OID, serious prose, humorous prose, informative, and entertainment.

Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon is a competition where students are tested over Language and Literature, Music, Art, Economics, and Science. Each student in Academic Decathlon is placed into one of three groups: Varsity, Scholastic, or Honors. Two students are allowed to compete in each group; the remaining students serve as alternates. The final test, called the Super Quiz, is the only event open to the public at the competition.
